James McKie

Traditional Celtic music, Folk music, Bluegrass, Klezmer – James McKie plays it all!

McKie is a highly accomplished fiddle and guitar player from Toronto. At only twenty seven years of age, he already has three albums to his name. His latest, Morning Song, has already amassed a loyal fan base for the young musician. Despite his youth, McKie is renowned for playing with a maturity and tastefulness well beyond his years.

McKie first got hooked on Irish traditional music at the age of twelve when he heard a recording of The Chieftains.   By the age of fifteen, McKie was teaching himself how to play the guitar.  That same year, he was hired as a member of the cast of Needfire, a Celtic themed musical by Mirvish Productions where he played alongside musical greats John Allan Cameron, Ray Legere, Jim Fidler, Mary Jane Lamond and Denny Doherty. By the age of nineteen, McKie was touring Ireland with Michael O’Grady and the two wowed audiences together on the main stage of the prestigious Fleadh Cheoil Festival.

McKie has opened shows for JP Cormier, Billy Ray Cyrus and Glen Campbell.  Within the past year while playing with Jerry Leger as part of the Situation, McKie has shared the stage with Ron Sexsmith, Dave Bidini, Julie Doiron and Justin Townes Earle.  He has also had the recent pleasure of playing in a workshop with the legendary Buffy Sainte Marie at the acclaimed Hillside Folk Festival.

Perfect for Celtic themed celebrations, McKie can entertain your audience solo or with two or three piece accompanists.

Affectionately known around town as the Shpeelers and rooted in the Klezmer tradition, James McKie along with Gabriel Benchitrit, Dan Mock and Simon Diamond are a highly spirited string quartet that play a selection of their favourite songs from a vast inherited Klezmer repertoire.
